Up at 6. Breakfast at 630. In the van by 7. Is this a relaxing vacation? No, this is the Alpe. This is EPIC. Worth losing sleep over.
We drive over an hour to Bourg Ognisains (??). We collect our bikes and nerves, have a last espresso, and roll a few k over roads crowded with cars, bikes and pedestrians up to the mountain.

Note that we are wearing our SUFFERLANDRIAN national team jerseys. We would get many shout outs on the climb from fellow Sufferlandrians.
Riding through intense crowds, we make our way through a little town where the road suddenly takes a sharp left onto an 8%?grade. Ouch!
The switchbacks are blessedly flat to drink or take photos. Here's Jane with Cathy:

We made a lot of friends on the climb. These Brits went nuts over our WTF socks!
By the way, this sign over their heads indicate the numbered switchback. Starts at 21. 1 is at the top.
How the heck did the Cannondale team bus manage not to run anyone down?
And oh yeah, we are getting way high up in the alps which are very pretty.
